How much energy does your PS4 game console use? How much electricity bill you get for using your gaming console for 24 hours? How much power does PS4, Xbox or any gaming console use?

A modern video game console like the PlayStation 4 (PS4) or the Xbox One uses between 120 watt – 150 watt when it is being used for gaming, and 1-10 watts during standby mode when the console is off but plugged in. For other uses like video and downloads, most consoles use in the 60-100 watt range.

If you want to use the gaming console power consumption calculator then feel free to scroll down the page to use it.

To use the gaming console power consumption calculator to calculate the power consumption of your PS4, Xbox or any gaming console and interpret the results correctly you understand the following terms.

  • What is Watt (W) – Watt is a unit of power. It means the rate at which electricity is consumed or produced by a device. For example a 50 watt TV consumes power at a rate of 50 watts per hour, it does not mean that the TV consumed 50 units of electricity, it means it will consume power at a rate of 50 watts every hour.
  • What is Kilowatt (kW) – Kilowatt is also a unit of power. Kilowatt (KW) is used for large devices that consume more power. For example a 1.5 kW air conditioner, 6 kW elevator. There are bigger units like Megawatt (MW), Gigawatt (GW) to describe large power consumption or generation. For example 100 Megawatt (MW) coal power plant. (1 kW = 1000 W)
  • What is a Kilowatt hour (kWh) – Units as described in electricity bill a.k.a kilowatt hour is the energy consumption of a device. For example a 50 watt Television (TV) running for 50 hours will consume 50 watt x 50 hours = 2500 watt hours = 2.5 kilowatt hours of electricity = 2.5 units of electricity.(1 kWh of electricity = 1 unit of electricity)
  • Electricity Tariff – Electricity tariff is the amount the electricity provider charges you for one unit (kWh) of electricity. I live in Mumbai, India here the electricity tariff is Rs 12/kWh. If you don’t know how to calculate your tariff then just divide your total bill by monthly power consumption and you will get your electricity tariff.
  • What is operational hours – Operational hours of a device refers to how many hours the device is working. If you run your television for 3 hours then operational hours of your television is 3 hours.

To calculate your gaming console power consumption (PS4, Xbox, Nintendo any gaming console power consumption) just put the wattage of your gaming console, operational hours and electricity tariff in your locality and you will get the units of electricity your gaming console will consume and the impact it will have on your electricity bill.

If you don’t know the wattage of your gaming console then type in 150 watts.

The rated power mentioned on your gaming console will be the maximum power your gaming console can provide and it is generally very high.

So if you have used that figure to calculate your gaming console power consumption then the values will be exaggerated.

The below table shows PS4 power consumption in various operating scenarios.

The table is obtained from arstechnica, they have done detailed review on PS4 to obtain this values. You can check that blog over here

Gaming Mode Power (watts)
Standby Mode
10 watts
Standby Mode (Download)
70 W
Idle on Menu
83 W - 91 W
Idle With Disc Inside
93 W - 96 W
93 W - 96 W
96 W
Game Installation
108 W - 116 W
Gaming (Resogun)
130 W - 139 W
Gaming (Killgun)
144 W - 151 W
Charging Controller
4 W

Use the above table to find the power wattage of your gaming console.

If you want to know the power consumption of your gaming console while gaming then select wattage between 130 W to 150 W and then go ahead with the calculation.

Other thing to consider is that the above calculated values are only for power consumption of your gaming console,  to get the exact figure of the power consumption you should also add the wattage of your TV or screen since it is turned on the entire time you are using your gaming.

So a 5 hour gaming session with PS4 on a LED screen of 80 watts will consume around 1.150 kWh of electricity which will translate to an electricity bill of Rs 14.

(Assumptions PS4 wattage while gaming – 150 W, Electricity tariff – Rs 12 ).
