If you are wondering how much electricity your curling iron is consuming then this article is for you. We will calculate the power consumption of a curling iron and also look at the cost to use it.

By the end of this article you will learn to calculate power consumption of any curling iron using a simple calculator.

Curling irons are normally rated between 40 watts to 80 watts. A 50 watt curling iron running for 1 hour every week will consume around 0.2 kWh of electricity in a month which adds upto 2.6 kWh of electricity in a year.

The above power consumption figures are same whether you live in India, US or anywhere else. To calculate the cost to run your curling iron just multiply the power consumption with your electricity tariff.

Curling Iron Power Consumption:

The power consumption of a hair curling iron (for that matter any electrical appliances) depends upon two main things

  1. First is the wattage of your curling iron,
  2. And second is the electricity tariff in your area.

Before we jump in to calculating the power consumption of your curling iron, lets see what these terms are and how you can find out your curling iron wattage and the electricity tariff of your locality.

If you already know these terms and just want to use the calculator then please scroll down.

what is The Wattage of A curling iron:

hair curling iron rated wattage
Curling Iron 45 Watts

The wattage of a curling iron varies from 40 watts to over 80 watts, the higher the wattage, higher is the electricity consumption.

You can find the wattage of your curling iron by reading on the label in it or just look for your curling iron on amazon and you will find its wattage in the description section.

(if you don’t want to do this then don’t worry, I have put at the end table which shows power consumption of a range of curling iron with different wattage.)

If you don’t know what a watt is then here it is,

Watt is the unit of power. It means the rate at which electricity is consumed or produced by a device.

For example, a 50 watt TV consumes power at a rate of 50 watts per hour, it does not mean that the TV consumed 50 units of electricity, it means it will consume power at a rate of 50 watts every hour.

So in short, the wattage of a curling iron lies between 40 watts to 80 watts and you can find it by looking at the label on it. With that out of the way lets look at what is electricity tariff.

What is your Electricity Tariff:

In simple words electricity tariff is the amount your electricity provider charges you for one unit (kWh) of electricity. I live in Mumbai, India here the electricity tariff is Rs 12/kWh.

(What is a Kilowatt hour (kWh) Kilowatt hours or units of electricity is the energy consumption of a device. For example, a 50 watt table fan running for 50 hours will consume 50 watt x 50 hours = 2500 watt hours = 2.5 kilowatt hours of electricity = 2.5 units of electricity. (1 kWh of electricity = 1 unit of electricity))

To find your electricity tariff, just look into your previous month electricity bill and find out your monthly electricity consumption. Then just divide your monthly electricity consumption with your total monthly electricity bill, the figure you get is approximately your electricity tariff.

If you don’t want to do any of this then just google electricity tariff followed by your location.

Calculate Your curling iron power consumption:

With these two information in hand you are ready to calculate the power consumption of your curling iron.

Let me show you with an example,

curling iron rated watts

I have selected a 50 watts curling iron listed on amazon India. Lets assume we will be using this for 1 hour every week for an entire year.

Hence, we will calculate the power consumption of this curling iron in a day, in a month and in an entire year.

With the knowledge of your curling iron wattage and your electricity tariff, just use this simple formula to calculate power consumption.

Power consumption of a curling iron = Wattage of a curling iron X operational hours

Cost to run a curling iron = Power consumption of a curling iron X electricity tariff.

(Operational hours is basically the number of hours you are using your curling iron)

Now let’s calculate

Electricity consumption of A 50 watt curling iron:

Wattage in our case is 50 watts and number of hours is 1 in a week, 4 in a month and 52 in a year.

Hence by using the above formula.

Power consumption of a 50 watt curling iron in a day/week (1hr) = 50 watt X 1 hour = 50 watt hour (Wh) = 0.05 kWh

We will convert this 50 watt hour (Wh) into Kilo watt hour (kWh) as electricity tariffs are given for per kWh. To do this simply divide 50 by 1000, you will get 0.05 kWh (As 1kg = 1000g, 1km = 1000m, similarly 1kWh = 1000Wh)

Similarly, Power consumption of a 50 watt curling iron in a month (4 hours) = 0.05 kWh X 4 = 0.2 kWh

And Power consumption of a 50 watt curling iron in a year (52 hours) = 0.05 kWh X 52 = 2.6 kWh

Now that we know the power consumption, just multiply it by your electricity tariff and you will get how much it will cost you to run your curling iron.

let’s calculate how much it will cost to run this 50 watt curling iron for an entire month in Los Angeles, London and in Mumbai.

  • In case of Los Angeles, the electricity tariff in Los Angeles is around 25.8 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), hence it will cost around cents 5.16 (0.2 kWh X 25.8 cents) to run this 50 watt curling iron for 4 hours in a month.
  • In case of London, the electricity tariff in London is around 36p/kWh , hence it will cost around pence 72 (0.2 kWh X 36p/kWh) to run this 50 watt curling iron for 4 hours in a month.
  • In case of Mumbai, the electricity tariff in Mumbai is around Rs 10 per kilowatt hour (kWh), hence it will cost around Rs 2 (0.2 kWh X Rs 10) to run this 50 watt curling iron for 4 hours in a month.

For your reference, I have calculated the cost to run this 50 watt curling iron for 1 hour/week for the entire month and the entire year in Los Angeles, London and Mumbai.

Country (Tariff)Weekly Power Consumption of a Curling Iron
50 Watt @ 1 hour/week
Monthly Power Consumption of a Curling Iron
50 Watt @ (4 hours/month)
Annual Power Consumption of a Curling Iron
50 Watt @ (52 hours/year)
Los Angeles (25.8 c/kWh)0.05 kWh, cents 1.290.2 kWh, cents 5.162.6 kWh, cents 67.08
London (36p/kWh)0.05 kWh, pence 1.80.2 kWh, pence 7.22.6 kWh, pence 93.6
Mumbai (Rs 10/kWh)0.05 kWh, Rs 0.500.2 kWh, Rs 22.6 kWh, Rs 26

After seeing the above results, it safe to say hair curling iron does not consume much electricity.

The actual power consumption would be even less than the above values as there are different temperature settings in a curling iron and unless you use it at maximum temperature it will not consume peak power.

Electricity Consumption Table For Different Curling Iron:

For your reference, I have made the below table which shows the power consumption of different wattage hair curling iron running for 1 hour every day for an entire year.

WattageDaily Power Consumption
( 1 hour/day
)
Monthly Power Consumption
(30 hours/month)
Annual Power Consumption
(365 hours/year)
40 watts0.04 kWh1.2 kWh14.6 kWh
50 watts0.05 kWh1.5 kWh18.25 kWh
60 watts0.06 kWh1.8 kWh21.90 kWh
70 watts0.07 kWh2.1 kWh25.55 kWh

As you can see from the above table, even if you use a 70 watts curling iron for 1 hour every day throughout the year, the total power consumption is just 25.55 kWh.

This mean in Los Angeles it will cost $ 6.59 (25.55 kWh X cents 25.8/ kWh), in London it will cost £ 9.19 (25.55 kWh X pence 36/ kWh), and in Mumbai it will cost Rs 255 (25.55 kWh X Rs 10/ kWh) to run this 70 watts curling iron for 1 hour everyday for the entire year.

Now go ahead and use the below calculator to find out the power consumption of your curling iron.

Just type the wattage of your curling iron, number of hours of usage and your electricity tariff and let the calculator do the math for you.
